Luc Melançon has studied fine arts and in environmental design at the Université du Québec in Montréal.  While dedicating himself to the visual arts, particularly to the sculpture, he taught the fine arts in primary and secondary grade and made set decorations and costumes. He was also a property man for the cinema and the television, photo technician for an international association and a graphic designer for diverse publications.  He also followed a course in cabinetmaking.
In his spare time, he practices fishing and devotes to outdoor activities.  And so he came there to be interested in cedar strip/canvas canoes. In 2004, he decided to study the building and the restoration of cedar canoes. He studied and worked for a year, full time, with Bill Wilson of Paugan Falls Canoes. In 2005 he founded Canots Lost-River, north of Montréal, in the Laurentians.
